Loose Fruit Picker
Pengutip Buah Lerai (Kelapa Sawit)
"This highly physical, foundational agricultural sector focuses on the manual collection of fallen oil palm fruits to maximize crop yield and oil extraction rates."
The Career Story
Loose Fruit Pickers perform one of the most physically demanding yet crucial tasks in the palm oil industry. When a harvester cuts down a massive Fresh Fruit Bunch (FFB), hundreds of ripe, oil-rich individual fruits shatter and scatter across the ground. The Picker is responsible for manually collecting these loose fruits.
The work is entirely physical. Pickers squat, bend, and crawl through underbrush, tossing the loose, thorny fruits into empty fertilizer bags or buckets. They then haul these heavy sacks (often weighing 20-30kg) to the collection road for the tractor to pick up. They are constantly exposed to the elements: scorching tropical sun, sudden monsoons, mosquitoes, and occasionally snakes or scorpions.
This role is typically paid on a piece-rate basis (per kilogram collected). It requires absolutely zero formal education and serves as a vital entry point for uneducated or migrant laborers seeking guaranteed income. Due to the extreme physical hardship, automation via mechanized vacuums or robotic pickers is a heavily researched area, but human labor remains the standard due to the complex, uneven terrain of plantations.
