Timber Grader

Pemeringkat Kayu Balak (Pakar Penilaian Kualiti Kayu)

"This specialized forestry sector focuses on visually and physically inspecting sawn timber to determine its quality, species, and commercial value for export."

The Career Story

Timber Graders are the diamond appraisers of the forestry industry. To strictly differentiate: The Logging Manager cuts down the tree. The Carpenter builds the furniture. The Timber Grader inspects the freshly cut wood at the sawmill to declare if it is premium export-grade Meranti worth thousands, or flawed wood only good for cheap pallets.

Malaysia (particularly Sabah and Sarawak) is a massive exporter of tropical timber. A Timber Grader is legally required to inspect and certify the wood before it can be sold internationally. They work in loud, dusty sawmills or hot log yards.

They must possess an encyclopedic knowledge of wood species. They inspect massive logs or sawn boards for defects: insect holes, rot, cracks, and the straightness of the grain. Using official grading rules (like the Malayan Grading Rules), they mark the wood with specific colored chalk or stamps to denote its grade.

Because buyers in Japan, Europe, or the Middle East rely entirely on the Graders certificate to pay millions of ringgit for a shipment, the Grader must have absolute integrity. A misgraded shipment can result in massive international lawsuits. It is a highly specialized, tactile job for people who love nature and hands-on work.

Travel to Ports

You often travel to major shipping ports to conduct final inspections before export.
