Satellite Ground Station Technician

Juruteknik Stesen Bumi Satelit (Penyelenggara Komunikasi Angkasa)

"This highly specialized aerospace and telecom sector focuses on maintaining the massive parabolic antennas and RF equipment that communicate with satellites in orbit."

The Career Story

Satellite Ground Station Technicians are the earth-side operators of space communication. To strictly differentiate: The NOC Engineer monitors fiber cables. The Rigger climbs 5G towers. The Satellite Technician maintains the massive, 15-meter wide dish antennas (Teleports) that shoot data thousands of kilometers into space to orbiting satellites.

While fiber optics run the cities, satellites run the remote world. Ships at sea, oil rigs, and deep jungle villages rely on VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) or massive ground station teleports. The technicians who run these stations deal with incredibly powerful Radio Frequency (RF) equipment.

Their daily life is highly technical and often isolated. They work at 'Teleports' (massive fields of giant satellite dishes) or travel by helicopter/boat to remote oil rigs to fix broken VSATs. They must perfectly calibrate High Power Amplifiers (HPAs) and Low Noise Block downconverters (LNBs).

If a dish is misaligned by even a fraction of a degree, it misses the satellite entirely. They use spectrum analyzers to track the satellite beacon and ensure the frequency is clean. With the explosion of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) constellations like Starlink, the demand for technicians who understand satellite tracking mechanisms and space-to-earth RF physics is undergoing a major revival.

A Day in the Life

1
Operate and maintain massive parabolic antennas, ensuring mechanical tracking gears follow satellites perfectly.
2
Calibrate and repair complex RF equipment including HPAs, LNBs, BUCs, and satellite modems.
3
Use Spectrum Analyzers to monitor the 'carrier' signal, identifying and eliminating frequency interference.
4
Perform preventative maintenance on radomes, antenna motors, and de-icing systems to prevent weather damage.
