Rig Electrician

The Rig Electrician manages the high-voltage power networks that drive offshore exploration assets. Offshore drilling platforms operate as independent micro-cities, generating and distributing megawatts of power to drive massive mud pumps, top-drives, and living quarters. Because methane gas may be present around the rig floor, the electrician ensures that every connection, motor enclosure, and light fixture is perfectly sealed and explosion-proof.

A typical day involves working with high-voltage distribution networks. They maintain Silicon Controlled Rectifier (SCR) systems or Variable Frequency Drives (VFD) that control drillstring rotation speeds, troubleshoot generator switchgears, and perform routine insulation resistance testing (megging) on deep-well pump motors. The work demands precision, as a single electrical arc in a hazardous zone can trigger a major explosion.

This career pathway requires a strong background in electrical engineering, formal high-voltage certifications, and an understanding of hazardous area classifications (ATEX/IECEx). It offers excellent financial compensation and a structured career progression within corporate drilling and maritime support networks.
