Residential Fellow

Felo Kolej Kediaman / Warden

"The campus living sector managing student dormitories, ensuring resident welfare, enforcing rules, and acting as the first responder for after-hours emergencies."

The Career Story

Residential Fellows (or Wardens) are the live-in guardians of university dormitories. To strictly differentiate: The Security Guard patrols the perimeter. The Facilities Manager fixes the broken pipe. The Residential Fellow lives among the students, managing dorm culture, mediating midnight roommate fights, and responding to medical emergencies at 3 AM.

In Malaysia, public universities (IPTA) rely heavily on "Felo Kolej Kediaman" to manage their massive student hostels. This is rarely a standalone full-time job; it is usually a secondary role taken on by university lecturers, administrative staff, or postgraduate students in exchange for free campus housing and a monthly allowance.

The job is primarily an after-hours responsibility. A Residential Fellow is the "parent" of their designated dormitory block. They organize hostel activities to build community, enforce curfews, and conduct spot-checks for contraband (like illegal cooking appliances or vapes). Most crucially, they are the first responders. If a student falls severely ill at 2 AM, has a mental health crisis, or if a fire alarm goes off, the Fellow is the one waking up to handle it.

Why People Choose This Path

You become a highly respected older-sibling figure to hundreds of students, building lifelong bonds.

Convenience

Since you live where you work (or study), you completely eliminate daily traffic commutes.
