Researcher

Penyelidik (Dasar Awam/Sosial)

"This highly influential sector operates in the shadows of political and corporate power. It involves conducting deep qualitative and quantitative investigations into socio-economics, public policy, and national welfare to guide the decisions of governments and NGOs."

The Career Story

Researchers (Policy Analysts) are the intellectual engine behind the government. Working in elite think tanks, they gather massive amounts of social and economic data to write the policy briefs that ministers and lawmakers use to run the country.

While a "Research Scientist" works in a lab with chemicals, the "Researcher" works in a Think Tank with human data. In Malaysia, organizations like the Khazanah Research Institute (KRI), IDEAS, or ISIS Malaysia are the intellectual powerhouses of the nation. The Researchers who work here are the people who actually figure out how to solve massive national crises, such as the rising cost of living, the lack of affordable housing, or the flaws in the education system.

Their daily life is an intense cycle of reading, interviewing, and writing. They conduct "Literature Reviews," reading hundreds of academic papers to understand how a country like Finland solved its housing crisis. They execute "Field Work," running focus groups with struggling B40 families or interviewing corporate CEOs to understand the root cause of youth unemployment.

Once they gather the data, they synthesize it into brilliant, highly persuasive "Policy Briefs." These are 10-page documents sent directly to Members of Parliament or Cabinet Ministers. If the government announces a new minimum wage policy or a new tax structure, it is almost guaranteed that a team of Researchers wrote the math and the justification behind it.

AI is highly effective at summarizing documents, but it cannot navigate the deeply empathetic, cultural, and political nuances of interviewing a marginalized community, nor can it negotiate with politicians to actually implement a law. It is an incredibly powerful, quiet career for those who want to change the country without running for office.
