Stevedores are the hardcore, heavy-duty physical laborers of the maritime world. They work directly on the decks and in the dark holds of massive cargo ships, physically securing (lashing) or unsecuring containers so that the giant quay cranes can lift them safely.

When a container ship arrives, it must be unloaded and reloaded within 24 hours. The Stevedore team boards the ship via steep gangways. Using heavy metal turnbuckles and lashing rods (weighing up to 25kg each), they lock the stacked containers together to ensure they don't fall into the ocean during rough storms.

For "break-bulk" ships (carrying loose cargo like steel pipes or grain), stevedores operate winches, hook up heavy lifting slings, and physically guide tons of swaying metal into the ship's belly. It is one of the most physically exhausting, dangerous, and extreme environments in the logistics sector, offering high danger pay and shift allowances.

A typical morning might involve unlashing three tiers of containers so the cranes can begin discharging, while the afternoon is spent troubleshooting a jammed deck lock in the blazing sun. They must be experts in maritime rigging and dockside safety. The goal is maximum turnaround speed, securing the cargo safely so the ship can catch the next tide.
