Police Sergeant YA5

The Sarjan Polis (YA5) is where operational experience meets leadership in the Royal Malaysia Police. A Sergeant is the "supervisor of the streets." If a Constable is the worker, the Sergeant is the foreman. They can enter the force directly via a Diploma qualification, or rise from the rank of Constable after years of experience and passing difficult internal law exams (PTK).

Sergeants hold massive operational responsibility. They serve as the Shift Supervisor (Ketua Syif) at police stations, determining which constables go on patrol and managing the station's armory. In the field, a Sergeant leads tactical raid teams, coordinates major roadblocks, and takes charge at complex crime scenes until higher-ranking Inspectors or ASPs arrive.

Crucially, Sergeants often act as Assistant Investigating Officers (AIO) or even lead investigators for minor crimes (like simple theft or traffic accidents). They compile investigation papers, interview witnesses, and liaise with the Deputy Public Prosecutor. It is a highly respected, authoritative rank that bridges the gap between the lower ranks (Constables/Corporals) and the gazetted officers (Inspectors and above).
