The Optometric Assistant bridges the gap between retail sales and clinical healthcare. Working predominantly in optical chains (like Focus Point, A-Look) or private ophthalmology clinics, they are the first point of contact for patients seeking vision correction.

Before the Optometrist checks the patient's precise prescription, the Assistant conducts pre-tests. They use an autorefractor machine to get a baseline eye measurement and a tonometer to test eye pressure (checking for glaucoma). Afterward, they transition into a consultative retail role: helping the customer choose a frame that fits their face shape, explaining the benefits of different lenses (e.g., anti-blue light, progressive lenses), and physically adjusting the frames to sit comfortably on the nose and ears.

While online glasses sales are growing, the physical necessity of eye testing, precise pupil distance (PD) measurement, and frame adjustment ensures that physical optical stores and the assistants who run them remain highly relevant. It is a clean, fashionable, and low-stress entry into the healthcare-retail space.
