Oil Palm Grader

The Oil Palm Grader (Gredor Sawit) holds an authoritative, critical gatekeeping position within the Malaysian palm oil supply chain. When transport lorries arrive at a palm oil mill (kilang sawit) or collection depot from various plantations, the fruits cannot just be dumped into the processing vats. They must be legally graded. This is because the price paid to the estate depends entirely on the fruit quality.

The Grader uses a specialized steel spike pole to flip and examine samples from each lorry load. They evaluate criteria established by the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB): checking for perfectly ripe bunches (high oil content), under-ripe bunches (low oil), over-ripe bunches, long stalks that damage machinery, or water-soaked fraud bunches.

This role requires absolute integrity, as graders face immense pressure or bribery attempts from lorry drivers and estate owners to inflate quality grades. It is an excellent technical role for SPM holders, offering structured advancement via official MPOB regulatory certificates. Computer vision AI is beginning to assist in automated fruit scanning, but human graders are still heavily required to physically probe bunches and make official final legal declarations.
