Offshore Painter and Blaster

This is extremely harsh, dirty, and loud work. First comes the blasting. The worker dons a heavy protective suit and a thick canvas helmet pumped with fresh breathing air. They operate a high-pressure hose that blasts abrasive grit (like sand or copper slag) at supersonic speeds against the rusty steel, stripping it down to shiny white metal. The noise is deafening, and visibility drops to zero in a cloud of dust.

Once the steel is bare, the Painter takes over before the sea air can rust it again (often within hours). Using high-pressure airless spray guns, they apply thick, toxic, multi-part industrial epoxy coatings.

The work is often done while standing on the temporary platforms built by Scaffolders or hanging from ropes over the ocean. It requires specific certifications (like IMM in Malaysia) to ensure the paint thickness (measured in microns) is perfect. It is grueling, messy labor, but essential for the survival of the multi-billion ringgit offshore infrastructure.
