Meteorologist
Pakar Meteorologi (Kaji Cuaca)
"This highly dynamic, computationally intense sector focuses on the Earths atmosphere. It involves utilizing supercomputers, satellites, and physical fluid dynamics to forecast daily weather, issue severe disaster warnings, and support global aviation."
The Career Story
Meteorologists are the physical scientists of the sky. They analyze chaotic atmospheric data to predict the weather, providing the critical daily forecasts that keep airplanes from crashing, farmers from losing crops, and coastal cities safe from typhoons.
Their daily life is an endless battle with "Chaos Theory." The atmosphere is a massive, incredibly complex fluid system. They spend their days staring at radar screens, satellite imagery, and weather balloons. They feed billions of data pointstemperature, barometric pressure, wind sheer, and humidityinto massive supercomputers that run Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models.
They do not just tell you if you need an umbrella; they are the guardians of the economy. An Aviation Meteorologist must calculate the exact wind sheer at 30,000 feet; if they calculate wrong, a commercial airliner might crash upon landing. During the dreaded "Monsun Timur Laut" (Northeast Monsoon), they work 24/7 shifts, constantly tracking the trajectory of tropical typhoons in the South China Sea. They have the absolute authority to issue "Red Alerts" that trigger national flood evacuations by the Civil Defense forces.
AI is revolutionizing meteorology, processing weather patterns faster than ever before. However, the AI cannot take the legal and moral responsibility of grounding all flights at an airport or triggering a national disaster protocol. The human Meteorologist must interpret the model's data, apply local geographic intuition, and make the final, high-stakes call.
Why People Choose This Path
Save Lives from the Sky
Your accurate predictions are the only thing that gives citizens enough time to evacuate before a catastrophic flood hits.
Crucial to Global Travel
You are the invisible force that keeps millions of airline passengers safe from lethal turbulence and storms.
High-Tech Data Science
You get to work with some of the most advanced supercomputers, satellites, and radar tech on the planet.
Stable Government Career
As part of MetMalaysia, you enjoy permanent civil service (SPA) employment, pensions, and high authority.
Dynamic and Unpredictable
The weather changes every hour; no two days in the operations room will ever be exactly the same.

The Journey to Become One
1. Secondary School (SPM)
5 YearsStraight A's in Physics and Mathematics. You must understand fluid dynamics and calculus.
2. Pre-University
1 to 2 YearsFoundation in Science, A-Levels, or Matriculation with a strict focus on pure Physics.
3. Bachelor's Degree
3 to 4 YearsDegree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Sciences, Physics, or Applied Mathematics.
4. SPA Application & Training
6 MonthsApply to the Public Service Commission (SPA) for the Pegawai Meteorologi role. You will undergo specialized training at MetMalaysia.
5. Operations Meteorologist
LifetimeYou start on the 24/7 shift desk, issuing basic forecasts, eventually moving up to direct the National Weather Operations Centre during major monsoons.
Minimum Academic Reality Check
Undergraduate
Bachelor of Science in Meteorology, Physics, or Mathematics.
Postgraduate
A Master's in Atmospheric Science is heavily preferred for promotion to senior directorships or R&D roles.
Licensing
Appointment by the Public Service Commission (SPA) for government roles. Aviation meteorologists require specific CAAM/WMO certifications.
Mindset
Must have an extremely thick skin. The weather is chaotic, and the public will blame you personally if a forecast is wrong.
