Geologist
Pakar Geologi
"The Science and Environment sector focuses on understanding the natural world and applying that knowledge to ensure sustainability, safety, and innovation. Professionals here solve the physical and biological challenges facing humanity."
The Career Story
Geologists are the historians and detectives of the Earth. They study the physical structure of the planet to discover valuable energy resources, predict catastrophic natural disasters, and ensure safe mega-construction projects.
A typical day is split between rugged, adventurous fieldwork and high-tech corporate analysis. During an expedition, a geologist might spend weeks in a remote Bornean jungle, using heavy drills to pull up core samples of ancient rock. They return to air-conditioned corporate offices to run those samples through advanced 3D seismic imaging software. If they are working for an oil company, their analysis will dictate whether the company spends RM 100 million drilling a well. If they are wrong, the money is burned; if they are right, they make the company billions.
In Malaysia, Geologists are highly prized in two major sectors: Oil & Gas (PETRONAS) and Mega-Construction (MRT/Highways). In construction, "Engineering Geologists" must analyze the stability of the ground before a tunnel is dug; ignoring their advice leads to catastrophic landslides and sinkholes. With the global shift toward green energy, geologists are now frantically searching for Lithium and Cobaltthe rare minerals desperately needed to build electric vehicle (EV) batteries.
AI is heavily utilized to process massive seismic datasets, but the physical reality of striking a rock with a hammer, reading the subtle textures of the earth, and making a multi-million ringgit ethical safety call remains deeply human. This is an adventurous, highly respected, and highly paid scientific career.
