Flight Operations Assistant

Behind every smooth commercial flight is a massive control room called the Operations Control Center (OCC). The Flight Operations Assistant works here, directly supporting the licensed Flight Dispatchers and the pilots. Their job is data synthesis. Before a pilot even arrives at the airport, the Assistant is gathering critical information: scanning satellite weather radars for thunderstorms, checking NOTAMs (Notices to Airmen) to see if a runway in Tokyo is closed, and calculating the exact weight of the passengers.

They compile this massive amount of data into the Flight Briefing Package. This package tells the pilot exactly which route to fly to avoid turbulence, how much fuel to pump to reach the destination safely, and which alternate airports to divert to if an emergency happens.

While advanced flight planning software handles the heavy algorithmic calculations, the Assistant must manually verify the data, monitor live flights on the tracking screens, and communicate with air traffic control during diversions. It is a highly analytical, quiet, but intensely critical desk job that serves as the perfect stepping stone to becoming a fully licensed Flight Dispatcher.
