The Penolong Pegawai Tanah (NT29) is a highly respected, diploma-level position attached primarily to Pejabat Tanah dan Galian (PTG) or District Land Offices (Pejabat Daerah dan Tanah). In Malaysia, land matters fall strictly under State jurisdiction, making the Land Office one of the most powerful government bodies in any state. The NT29 officer is the operational executor of this power.

Their duties are a mix of intense bureaucracy and rugged fieldwork. Desk work involves processing complex applications for land alienation (applying for state land), changing land use categories (e.g., from agriculture to commercial), and preparing documentation for land acquisition for public infrastructure (like building a new MRT line).

Fieldwork is where the job gets gritty. They drive 4x4s into deep jungles to inspect state land applied for by farmers, investigate reports of illegal sand mining or illegal squatters on government reserves, and accompany surveyors to resolve angry boundary disputes between neighbors. It requires deep knowledge of the Kanun Tanah Negara (National Land Code), high integrity to resist bribery from developers, and strong communication skills.
